Emily’s Entourage | Nicholas Kelly MS, RD, LD, an adult with cystic fibrosis “Let’s build a future on more than just Hope, but Reality” ~ N.Kelly 37 years ago, they didn’t believe African Americans could have [cystic fibrosis]. The problem is a lot of that rhetoric still exists today. Nick highlights how a lack of awareness that African Americans can have cystic fibrosis can lead to misdiagnosis and delays in treatment. In addition, he discusses the prevalence of rare mutations that are ineligible for mutation-targeted therapies among minority populations and the lack of focus on minority representation in research to develop new therapies. This poem was created for the Cystic Fibrosis Breath of Life Gala, which raised over 5 million dollars for Cystic Fibrosis Treatment and Cystic Fibrosis Research. We won’t stop until CF stands for #CureFound

DEI Special Presentation: The Lived Experience of Race and Culture
A moving, enlightening, and transformative Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion presentation celebrating Black History Month by Nicholas Kelly MS, RD, LD. Nick traveled from his home in Cleveland, Ohio to share his experiences navigating the medical world as a Black patient living with Cystic Fibrosis Passionate, energetic, knowledgeable, and compassionate, are a few words to describe Nicholas’s approach to life. His story began at 3 months old when his mother diagnosed him with cystic fibrosis. Growing up, Nick strove for normalcy, valuing himself as a person, meant to stand out. Nick thrived despite his disease; obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, and becoming a Registered Dietitian.
